Our care for people and nature

At Berries Pride, we work with our partners to make sure everyone can enjoy healthy and delicious berries all year round. This revolves around taking care of people and nature.

People

In our long-term and sustainable collaborations with growers we drive continuous improvement of working conditions. Together, we take responsibility for the well-being of workers and communities in our growing regions. We do this through intensive contact, regular visits and annual, independent audits. Through the Nature’s Pride Foundation, we commit to a healthy lifestyle and a good living environment in our growing regions.

Nature

Together, we have to take good care of nature so we can continue to enjoy the tastiest berries today and tomorrow. At Berries Pride we therefore make conscious choices and take our responsibility. Together with our growers, we work actively on responsible water management, maintaining biodiversity and reducing our emissions.

Water

Water is essential for everyone, but it is scarce. That's why, together with our growers, we are committed to ensuring responsible water management. We invest in maximising water conservation in the field, for example, by using the latest irrigation techniques, reusing water and effective soil management. But we also look beyond the grower in terms of water use. In areas where water use and availability are out of balance, we engage with stakeholders to make the ecosystem healthier. We develop Water Stewardship activities at a regional level, which involves ensuring progress together with local and international parties to successfully coordinate the supply and demand for water across the region. We are a sector leader in the certification of responsible water use, educating our buyers on key water issues and making water use an essential purchase criterion.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is essential to life on earth and crucial to maintaining and restoring healthy ecosystems. Healthy ecosystems provide fertile soils, water purification, pollination and natural pest control, and naturally, ensure the successful growth of our berries. They also protect us against extreme weather conditions. At Berries Pride, we identify our areas of greatest impact on the natural world and together with our partners see how we can ensure a positive contribution to maintaining biodiversity in our cultivation regions.

Climate

Climate change is one of the biggest global threats and we are already experiencing the impact of a changing climate in our cultivation regions. Increasing periods of drought and extreme weather affect harvests. Although fruit generally has a lower environmental footprint than other food products, our sector is still responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. With this in mind, we active work to reduce our emissions in the areas of cultivation, transport, energy and waste. We are the first berry importer worldwide whose climate objectives have been approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI). These objectives are in line with the Paris climate agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C. We review our progress on our objectives on an annual basis.
